VK Apothecary (Our Big Secret Revealed!)

Standard

logo

Welcome to VK Apothecary! Balms, soaps and candles for unrivaled grooming for ladies and gents. We’ve tinkered and tweaked formulas in our former Oddfellows hall for the past few weeks, and Ainslie even created her own tattoo balm!

We wanted to create a line of products that are unisex and evoke a feeling of the past. Below is a bit more about each product, although we recommend coming in for a whiff.

body balm

Body Balm

Made with cocoa butter, shea butter, bee’s wax, sunflower oil and vitamn E, this hydrating salve features a hint of lavender, cedarwood and real vanilla. Use it on hands, feet and other dry spots. A perfect blend of scents before bedtime to help you relax. $9.99 for a 2-ounce jar.

lipbalm

Lip Balm

Our lip balm features wintergreen and vanilla. We did a lot of testing on this one to get it right. (And not on our cats or anything like that. We tested it!) Ingredients include bee’s wax, sunflower oil, vitamin E and cocoa and shea butters. $2.99 for a .15-ounce tube.

tattoobalm

Tattoo Balm

What is tattoo balm? This is the stuff you put on your tattoo as it’s healing. Ainslie specially formulated this, and we’ve packaged it in an easy-to-apply container; you don’t have to touch your fresh tattoo. The ingredients include camphor and comfrey, an Appalachian healing herb. (Fun fact: Ainslie grew up in Appalachia.) $2.99 for a .15-ounce tube.

Thank you to all of the artists, our family and all of the great visitors who came to our Holiday Open House last night!

We had almost 80 people attend (and one cat), and we were able to raise $70 in donations that we are going to use to buy pet food for the Tuscola Food Pantry. Yes, Ranger, the famous cat in Tuscola, attended with his Santa suit on!

Thank you so much! The night went off without a hitch and we were blown away by everyone’s support of local handmade art!

If you missed it, we still have plenty of holiday goodies here for you. Our artists were even bringing in new items last night!

Check out some of the photos from the open house:

It’s beginning to look a lot like Thanksgiving

Standard

A lot of retailers have already put up their Christmas trees. Well, we are starting to get out the holiday goodies, but Thanksgiving needs some love, don’t you think?

Rushing through a season isn’t much fun, and it seems a shame to not enjoy fall for a little longer.

Here are our Vintage Karma picks for a happy Thanksgiving!

This apron by Leslie Hornaday of Mother of All Design would make a great gift for a hostess. Leslie suggests wrapping it around a bottle of wine! Click the photo to purchase.

This is our most popular offering from Homer Soda Company, but we have more than 20 flavors you can choose from to create your own six-packs and impress your guests. We’ve even got a ginger beer with a cocktail recipe on the back for the boozy types.

Cute and festive acorn earrings by Anne Potter. Click the photo to purchase!

This handmade triangle shawl is woven with Chilean fibers. A soft and warm treat from Carolina-Arellano Grant. The pin it comes with looks like a little knitting needle!

Looking dapper is never a bad idea. Click photo to get all dapper-fied for Thanksgiving dinner!

For the kiddies! By Kelley Englehardt of Posies and Pattycakes.

Laura Davis of VK made this acorn wall hanging. It’s so TEENY TINY! Click the pic!

Or maybe you’d rather put a bird on it? Joellyn Cobb has needle-felted a turkey for this cute little wreath.

Also made with felt, this brooch by Anna Marx of Posies and Pattycakes, means you can wear mums that never die!

Hugh Bridgeford of MudBugs Pottery made this French butter keeper. Perfect for a holiday table!

We have more Thanksgiving goodies in the store, and different versions of the items above, too.

Happy fall and have a happy Thanksgiving!

Meet the Robots

Standard

Hello! We recently got a new bunch of assemblage robots in from sisters Cheryl Slifer and Janet Alred of Decatur, and they are too fun not to share. Cheryl and Janet aren’t keen on giving interviews, but their work speaks for itself. Check it out!

This rather dapper fellow is Brad.  We love his bow tie made from a brooch and antennae fashioned from a wall hook!

Crystal is pretty big city. She’s got her nice purse and her little dog in her arms. I could definitely see her making her way through Manhattan.

Next up is Tattoo Man.

Those are tattoos up and down his arms. His full title is “Tattoo Man aka Snowflake Ain’t No Sissy.” He’s pretty tough with all those tats!

Picture Perfect’s pretty tough, too. I don’t think I’d want to get her angry. She already has her hands on her hips and her head cocked to one side. I get the feeling she doesn’t put up with any B.S.

Don’t even think about touching her purse, or she’ll smack you silly!

A friend of Picture Perfect is Soldier Boy. His body is an ammo canister. Awesome!

Last but not least is Queen Benita. Her name was inspired by her face, a Baby Ben clock. She wears a vintage flower clip and spends her days looking regal.

Hope you enjoyed checking out these wonderfully fun pieces of art! They’re hanging out at VK until they find new homes! Maybe for Christmas?

Featured Artist Hugh Bridgeford

Standard

Hugh Bridgeford of MudBugs pottery describes his art as “a hobby grown out of control.” The Urbana resident creates pottery with a sense of humor, and many of his current pots have a whimsical or satirical quality. He recently chatted with us about his art, which we’re happy to have at VK!

What was your first piece? What inspired you to create it?

I created a green vase in high school using the coil method. It had a sun across the side inspired by the movie “Yellow Submarine.”

How long have you been creating?

Nearly as long as I can remember I’ve been creating. I still have a couple Christmas ornaments I made as a child. I made a conscious decision to follow my creativity on leaving high school. I left years of commercial art in 2004, when I was juried into the Illinois Artisans Program.

How did you get into making pottery?

Pottery and drawing were originally something I did to take a break from work in commercial art. At the point I left commercial art I naturally filled more of my time with making pots. It’s a hobby grown out of control.

Describe your creative process.

My imagery is inspired by news that piques my interest: “Ned Kelly’s skull found” or “Parachute may be lead in D. B. Cooper case.” I research the news and try to find the core of what is interesting for me. At the same time I have some work already in progress in the studio allowing the new idea to gestate into imagery. There is a constant rhythm between the studio and researching backstories on the internet. I spend significant time in the studio every day that my wife isn’t home. On those days we may plan strategy or work cooperatively on projects.

What drew you to ceramics?

I love the rhythm of the ceramic process. Clay has to be prepared, then thrown and altered, spouts and handles added. Then dried and fired. All this before any imagery can be added to its surface. Each step has its own pace and generally cannot be rushed. It’s something akin to being a farmer – The outcome remains in question until harvest.

What is your favorite part of the creative process? What is your least favorite part?

After over a decade I have come to find pleasure in nearly every aspect of the potting process, even cleanup. The most exciting is to open a glaze firing and to see the finished work for the first time.

Click for more details of the blue jug.

What inspires you?

I am inspired by individuals or events I find outstanding or unique in some way. The current work uses the theme of moonshine and moonshining as a lens to look at individuals who acted outside of convention to perform dramatic and celebrated act. It may be D. B. Cooper and the only unsolved airline hijacking on the books or Ned Kelly who performed robberies wearing homemade armor in 1880s Australia.

What do you do when you’re not making art?

My wife, Ann, and I take seriously our obligation to give back to our community. We have been involved in issues of homelessness and hunger. We also donate to fundraisers for HIV awareness and access to medical care. Finally, we are always visiting friends and family spread from one end of the country to the other.
